Alla prima is an Italian word, literally meaning, “at first attempt”. It is a very old painting technique, used mostly in oil painting, in which the entire painting is finished in one sitting.
The “aliveness” and energy of painting alla prima is one of it’s most charming qualities. Often used for studies before the finished painting is begun. I like to take the technique out of it’s ordinary mode of being a faithful representation of reality and use it, instead, to capture fleeting ideas and conceptual imagery, trying to instill life in them before they’re lost.
